Why a Handwritten Message Makes Such a Special Birthday Gift

Most of us have a box tucked away somewhere that's full of old birthday cards. It's rarely the printed verses we keep them for. It's the bits people wrote themselves: a grandparent's wobbly "love you lots", or a note from a best friend that only ever made sense to the two of you. The presents get used up or forgotten, but those few lines stay with us for years.

At Canvas & Bear we spend a lot of our time making things personal, from wedding details and party bits to stationery and photo gifts. Our favourite way to make something personal is to start with someone's own handwriting.

Why handwriting means so much

Handwriting is one of those things you don't think about until you see it on an old card. The way someone loops their Ls, or draws a little heart instead of a dot. You'd know it anywhere.

That's why a handwritten message works so well on a birthday. It doesn't need to be long or clever. A few words from the right person are what make it special.

Our Letter Envelope Necklace

That's the idea behind our Letter Envelope Necklace. Inside the little envelope we engrave a real handwritten message, in the actual handwriting of the person who wrote it. It's a little secret note that goes everywhere with you.

You can choose silver, gold, or rose gold plating, and it's the kind of gift people keep forever.

Getting the message right

Short and sweet works best here, as longer messages come out smaller on the pendant. A simple "Happy birthday, love Mum" is perfect as it is, and so is a nickname only your family uses, or a date that matters to you both.

If you're buying for someone else, ask a person they love to write the message. A sister or a grandparent can write a line for you without knowing why! Have a few goes and pick the one you like most, then upload a clear photo of it when ordering, and we'll take care of the engraving.

If it's on your own wish list

If your own birthday is coming up and you'd secretly love one, there's no shame in saying so! Pop it on your Birthday Wish List and send the link to whoever always asks what you'd like. That way nobody ends up buying the same thing twice.

And if you've been roped into organising the office Secret Santa this year, a free Secret Santa Generator will draw the names and email everyone their match. One less job on the list!

A few words in the right handwriting really can be the best bit of a birthday. Have any questions about uploading your handwriting or custom orders? Get in touch with us here | We're always happy to help!
